Fort Crook Historical Society

February 3, 2009

The meeting of the Fort Crook Historical Society was called to order by President Robert Ingram at 7:00 P.M.  All stood for the flag salute.

Those present were board members Robert Ingram, Betty Stoltenberg, Milly Lakey, Charles Thomason, Tim Glaze, Billy Albaugh, John Fenn and Glorianne Weigand.  Also present were past President Chuck McCulley, curator Dorothy Mason and guest Leslie Mastalarz.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as corrected.

The Treasurer’s report was given and we have $30,697.68 in the General Fund and $50,643.88 in the Round Barn Fund.  Tim made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s report and John seconded it.  Motion passed.

OLD BUSINESS: Robert gave a Round Barn report and we can finally see progress.  The poles that needed to be peeled were done in five days time with an average of eight men working. They have been moved to the barn site and are now being put into place.  The foundation logs are all down on the cement footings and work is going along.  Dan McMillan is the head man and Ryan and Garret Smith from Valley Rentals have been working with him as well as Museum members. Robert and Dan met with a structural engineer today to try to get the plans for the X bracing removed so we can have windows in every other bay as the original barn had.

John has been in Contact with James Kramer an attorney from Redding about our liability for volunteers.  We need a waiver signed by everyone that does any work on the barn as well as any of the museum grounds.  Waivers were passed to the board members to have them signed for the 2009 season.  We have Workers Comp Ins. but for only one clerical.  Betty has checked with InterMountain Insurance to have our Liability Ins. raised.

The payroll for the barn has not been established and Robert will talk to Wayne Norris to see if we can run it through the Valley Rental business.

John said he has not had any luck with Jan Lopez who was suppose to do our grant writing since she has left the business she was affiliated with.

Leslie said she knew of a place in San Francisco where we may get a loan for alternate funding.

Carlton Cranes will again bring his crane when it is time to set the center pole and they will do that and the rafter poles while the crane is on location.

Dorothy said that Valley Hardware wants to make a bid on the shingles.

The Audit committee will meet on February 16 and it will be Glorianne, Karen Thrasher, Janice Barrett and Gail Bassett.

John gave the nominating committee report and the slate of officers that they have chosen are President, Charles Thomason; Vice President, John Fenn; Secretary, Glorianne Weigand; Treasurer, Betty Stoltenberg; Four year board member, Milly Lakey; two year board member to fill unexpired term for John Fenn, Chuck McCulley. Tim made a motion and Billy seconded it to accept the recommendation of the Nominating Committee of John Fenn, Sandy Jensen and Margo Norris.  Motion passed.

The budget committee of Robert, Betty, Milly and Leslie met and completed the budget for 2009. Tim made a motion to accept the budget and John seconded it.  Motion passed.

John reported that Ramiro has updated the web site and still needs to get the Dispatch to put on it.

Glorianne read a draft of the letter that will be sent out to the area museums inviting them to our Historical Societies gathering on May 9.  Milly made the motion to approve the letter and Charles seconded it.  Motion passed. The letters will be sent out by March 1st

The Five Year Plan meeting was held and Charles Thomason, Tim Glaze, Billy Mason, Stan & Glorianne Weigand made the recommendations which are; Replace roofs on Main building, James Building & Machinery Barn, Complete Round Barn, Bring restrooms up to ADA Compliance, Repair Fireplace in Lewis Cabin, Complete and furnish Fort Cabin, Upgrade all Electrical system, Long term landscaping, PG&E Hydro History Center, Restore Petersen Harvester, Improve Lighting in Barn, Replace or repair benches and picnic tables, Porch for Blacksmith Shop, Wheelwrights shop, James Building railings (already done) Glass for cabinets in Library, Racks for magazines, Mural behind canoe (already ordered).

We feel like a lot has been accomplished in the past few years.  We had a work day on the Fort Cabin and have it chinked and now ready for the caulking.  Billy Mason and Stan Weigand will start installing the windows so we can have it in use by our May opening.

John brought a collector item Bicycle which was donated by David Hall.  It is a 2008 Della Cruz and we will use it for a Harvest Dinner Raffle item.

Robert is going to ask Anita if she will head up the raffles and get prizes for us to give.

The guns that Steve Vaughn has offered will not be a raffle item due to raffle regulations. This may have to be revised.

The date for the Museum Hosted Yard Sale will be May 23 from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M.  We will charge $20.00 for a space.  Anyone is invited to have their yard sale on the Museum property or donate items for the members to sell to help roof the Round Barn.  Chuck has items left to the museum from an Estate and he will have a yard sale at his house for these items.

Pioneer Days and the 75th Anniversary celebration will be tabled until the March meeting.  We want to make picture boards for the anniversary.

NEW BUSINESS: The Fall River Lions Hall will be celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the building and they want to buy a plaque and have the Historical Society name put on the plaque.

Leslie brought a piece of wood from the San Francisco Pier with a brass plate on it for a souvenir. Bill Johnson said we could get the plates made with our 75th anniversary on them for $1.69 so Leslie is going to order 100 of them.  We need to get small souvenir items for the gift shop so Milly will look into that.

Al Smith who was a board member of the Fort Crook Historical Society passed away.  We all signed a card to send to his wife Barbara.  It was decided to buy a tree to plant on the museum grounds in memory of Al and all the work he did for the museum and put a plaque on it.  The garden team will take care of this in the spring.

Tom Glunt called Chuck and he has some items to do a logging display in the upstairs of the Fort Cabin when we get it ready to put items in to it..

Information for the Quilt show needs to be gotten out.  Sharon and Jeannette will take care of this. Leslie needs it for the newsletter.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 9:30 P.M.

Respectively Submitted,

Glorianne Weigand, Secretary
